Topic
Grid Edge Technologies – Benefits and Applications for Grid Operation and Planning

Date
Tuesday, 15 October 2019

Grid Edge Technologies are physical infrastructure assets, network or control applications, and analytics that form an “internet of things” which can be networked to improve power delivery.

Ampacimon Logo

Ampacimon is a provider of such a technology, in the form of grid monitoring solutions that enable smarter operation and planning of grids.

Our systems increase visibility of the electrical and physical characteristics of overhead power lines and underground cables.

Real-time and forecast values of line capacity provided by our systems are used by grid operators around the world.

In this tutorial, we will introduce application examples of grid edge technologies for dynamic line rating, line load monitoring and control, based on actual projects experiences of various grid operators.

It is recommended to attend this tutorial if you want to know how to demonstrate the benefits of such technologies to grid operators.

Lecture III

Removing congestion on existing grids using Modular Power Flow Control Technology
Lecturer: TBC (SmartWires, Ireland)

Smart Wires is the global leader in modular power flow control technology. Smart Wires solutions give system operators and planners the ability to maximise the use of their existing grids. Using Voltage Source Conversion technology we can increase or decrease the impedance of existing circuits to control how much power flows on them. Balancing flows on the grid can provide Gigawatts of additional transfer capacity without having to build new lines or upgrade existing corridors and can dramatically reduce the level of constraints applied to generators.

Modularity, very fast delivery and ease of installation allows system planners to choose the right size solution for the known future without having to guess what the long term future holds. As time moves forward the modular solution can be scaled up or down or even relocated at short notice to meet the ever changing needs of the grid. In addition to our fixed solutions, our unique Mobile SmartValve technology can facilitate lower cost or longer outages of existing circuits required for carrying out for essential maintenance or critical upgrades.

Smart Wires technology is an essential tool in the solution toolbox for system planners and operators. In this tutorial we will explain how the technology works, how it is applied in a power system planning process and discuss examples of where the technology is being used today.
